The Shakespeare’s Sister Company Brings the Arts to Lupus Patients
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK – May 9, 2011 –
In honor of Lupus Awareness Month this May, the Shakespeare’s Sister Company conducted a theater and playwriting workshop with patients of the Lupus Foundation. These patients have an everyday survival challenge. To be able to voice and their needs and questions to their doctors and families, to say what they mean and take their own initiative. Lupus patients are incredibly creative and often don’t have the opportunity to express these thoughts. Our aim, in a few hours time, is to give them tools they need to be able best prepare for their upcoming challenges and strengthen their voice to communicate their concerns and stand proud of their accomplishments.
The workshop took place on Monday, May 9th from 7:00-9:00pm at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. Photos and their story will be posted soon.
A Strong, Healthy, Woman
She paused and looked up at the sky, amazed at what she saw.
There was a giant, fuzzy, butterfly flapping its wings.
Rain drops fell like hails. Ants began to run into their holes. It felt so good.
She realized she was in a world of dreams and realized she could dream anything she wanted to see.
Suddenly, she felt the wings flutter over her face, her arms, her legs. And she felt pain free. She felt she could do anything so she started to run through the trees.
She touched every tree she could and shouted:
“We’re all free! We’re all one and are at peace!
Heeeellllooooo! Can you hear me? I’m so happy! I’m free to do whatever I want to do! Follow me!
I have seen the darkness and was afraid. Now I see the light. I have been brave. I have overcome my fears and have become a strong, healthy, woman!”
