Women’s Theater Workshop

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness month, the Shakespeare’s Sister Company launched Women’s Theater Workshop, hosted by CAMBA, in October of 2009 at the Park Slope Women’s Shelter in Brooklyn, New York. This program engages women in organizing the skills that they already have…that they innately possess, strengthens their voices and gives them confidence to prepare for their permanent housing interviews and re-entry into the workforce. With a 100% success rate, each client that has taken the women’s theater workshop has their permanent residence and many have jobs or have returned to school. It was a wonderful success for our company, as well as our charitable partners, CAMBA and Dress For Success.

The clients in the shelter are at their most vulnerable…the majority have been battered. Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness nationally and one-in-four women experience it in their lifetime. We created this week-long workshop in hopes of taking it to multiple shelters in New York City, before going national. Success stories can be viewed below, as well as commentary from the Shelter directors and CAMBA staff.
